Peaches

It’s been far too long since I featured a bunny on the blog!  So today, I’d like to introduce you to Peaches.  Anyone remember that news story earlier this year about the hoarding case in Howard County?  Peaches was one of those 78 rabbits seized from the home.  The owners had started out with just two, a male and a female… and in just two years they had 78.  Two words, folks:  Spay and Neuter!!!

As you can probably imagine, poor Peaches is not very well socialized.  Growing up in an environment like that, she must have had very little contact with people… and as a result, she’s now having a tough time finding her forever home.  She can be a bit grumpy at times and probably shouldn’t go home with small children who will constantly want to hug and squeeze her, but she does like to be petted.  She gets attention and socialization from the BHS staff and volunteers and has made some improvement, so imagine how well she would do in a home where she’s the only bunny and can be the center of attention!  Peaches is almost 2 years old, and is spayed and ready to go home.  Please go visit her at the BHS!

Thumper

Meet Thumper, a gorgeous bunny looking for her forever home.  Thumper was brought to the BHS in May because someone in the family was allergic to her.  If you’re looking for a large bunny, this is your girl!  She’s one of the larger rabbits that the BHS has had recently, at about 8 or 9 pounds.  Her size and rather unremarkable color are probably why she’s so often overlooked – people are always looking for tiny and cute – which is sad because she’s such a great bunny!  She has incredibly soft fur and absolutely loves to be petted.  Thumper is very strong and doesn’t really appreciate being picked up a lot – just something to keep in mind if you have children.  She’s about 2 1/2 years old, and is spayed and ready to go home for the holidays!  Please visit her to see how sweet and friendly she is.  (UPDATE: Thumper has been adopted!)

Check out that adorable white cottontail!

Honeydew

I think a blog entry for little Honeydew is long overdue!  This sweet bunny has been waiting for a home for almost an entire year.  She ended up at the shelter in the same way many other rabbits do… she was originally purchased from a pet store as a gift for someone who really didn’t want the responsibility of caring for a rabbit.  (Side note:  Please, PLEASE don’t ever buy a rabbit from a pet store… many of them are supplied by cruel rabbit mills.)  Honeydew is a medium size Rex bunny with super soft fur and the most adorable curly little whiskers.  She’s just as sweet as her name sounds, and has a very gentle nature.  She loves her fresh veggies, and although she’s a bit chubby, I’m sure she could slim down a bit if she had a home with space to run and play.  Honeydew is about 2 1/2 years old, and is spayed and ready to go home.  If you’re looking for a bunny, please consider this sweet girl!  (UPDATE: Honeydew has been adopted!)

Chowder

With the Easter holiday coming up, the Humane Society is no doubt preparing for the influx of unwanted rabbits that are sure to come through its doors in the near future.  Every year, rabbits that are purchased as Easter gifts are dumped at the local shelter when the novelty wears off (or worse, many are abandoned outdoors to fend for themselves).  The “Make Mine Chocolate” campaign works to educate the public about the responsibilities of rabbit ownership, in the hopes that fewer bunnies will be victims of impulse buyers during this time of year.  Check out their website at www.makeminechocolate.org.

If you read this blog, though, I’m guessing you’re probably not the kind of person who considers pets to be disposable.  For anyone that’s serious about caring for a rabbit, the BHS has plenty that need good homes!  Chowder is an incredibly sweet guy who has been at the shelter since February.  When we first met him, we immediately began to worry that he would be difficult to place… as a plain white rabbit with pink eyes, he’s likely to be overlooked.  The pink eyes can be off-putting for many people, and his large muscular build probably doesn’t help any (perhaps there’s too close of a resemblance to the Rabbit of Caerbannog?  Run away, Run away!)  Okay, all joking aside… if you take just a minute to get to know him, you’ll fall in love with him!  Chowder LOVES to snuggle and be petted, and he’s very gentle.  His sweet personality and loving temperament will more than make up for his looks… although personally, I think he’s pretty darn cute. You have to meet him!

(UPDATE: Chowder has been adopted!)

Princess

It’s been a while since I posted a bunny to the blog…. so this week, meet Princess.  Okay, so it’s not the most original name – but to be fair, it does fit her personality pretty well.  Princess has had a tough time finding her forever home.  She came to the shelter in 2007 after being abandoned, was then adopted, and was returned to the shelter in October 2009 because of an allergy in the family.  She’s independent and likes to have things her way, but still loves to get attention and snuggle.  Princess is a favorite among the volunteers and we all want to see her go to a permanent home!  (UPDATE: Princess has been adopted!)

Pounce

Pounce is one of the most handsome bunnies I’ve ever seen – just look at those gorgeous markings! He’s been at the shelter since March, and he’s super sweet. He’s fairly independent, but he’s also really easygoing and likes to be petted. He likes to stretch his back legs out directly behind him when he’s feeling lazy… I was hoping he would do it for the camera, but no such luck. Pounce is a relatively small bunny, and according to his previous owner he is great with kids. If you’re looking for a rabbit, please visit Pounce and all the other bunnies at the Humane Society – they currently have seventeen rabbits that need good homes!  (UPDATE:  Pounce has been adopted!)

Ginger

Ginger is a gorgeous bunny with a personality that’s just as fiery as that red hair of hers.  She came to the Humane Society in April, when her owner could no longer afford to care for her, and now she’s just over a year old.  Ginger gave us a bit of trouble when she first showed up – she wasn’t used to being handled, was extremely territorial, and would lunge at anyone that reached for her.  However, after months of socialization by volunteers and staff, I’m happy to say that she is MUCH more mellow and friendly now!  She likes to be petted, sits patiently while her nails are trimmed, and will even jump in your lap.  She can still be feisty at times and probably wouldn’t be a good choice for a young child, but so far she’s done very well with people who have come to visit her.  If you’re looking for a spunky and energetic bunny, go check her out!  (UPDATE: Ginger has been adopted!!)

Blue

Blue first came to the Humane Society in September 2007 when he was a very young bunny.  He was eventually adopted, but when we walked into the shelter this weekend, there he was again.  His previous owner had given “a change in lifestyle” as the reason for bringing him back….and so he is homeless once again, through no fault of his own.  As much as we adore Blue, we weren’t too pleased to see him!  If you’re looking for an outgoing and energetic bunny, this could be the guy for you.  Blue is now a little over 2 years old, and he’s very playful – he loves his toys!  He’s also litterbox trained and he’s used to being around other pets.  Please come visit him – we want him to go to his FOREVER home this time!  (UPDATE:  Blue has been adopted!)

If you’re looking for a pair of bunnies, go check out Rainbow and Snowflake! They’re two adorable sisters who were brought to the Humane Society in November 2008 because their owner was allergic to them. They’re 10 months old and are very small, but they probably won’t get any bigger. Rainbow is the more outgoing of the two, while Snowflake is more shy and wary of strangers. Like many rabbits, they don’t appreciate being picked up off the ground, but they do like to be petted. They’re already litterbox trained and are very clean. Visit them at the shelter if you think they could be the bunnies for you!  (UPDATE:  Rainbow and Snowflake have been adopted!)

Bugsy

Bugsy is one of our favorite bunnies at the shelter! She’s incredibly sweet and gentle, and loves to get attention. She came to the shelter in August 2008 when she lost her previous home due to issues with the landlord. Bugsy is very well socialized, and is absolutely fantastic with children! She’s just over a year old, she’s already spayed, and she uses her litterbox. You couldn’t ask for a better personality in a rabbit, so if you’re looking for an easygoing bunny with lots of love to give, this is your girl!  (UPDATE:  Bugsy has been adopted!!)
